In this procedure, the infertility doctor uses Laparoscope to check the reproductive organs of a woman. Generally a laparoscope is a long, thin tube with high intensity light and is having a high resolution camera. After inserting this laparoscope into the walls of the abdomen, the images relayed by the camera can be projected onto a video monitor. This process helps in examining the reproductive organs of the woman without any surgery.

Pelvic Laparoscopy is a kind of surgery that is used to examine pelvic organs and also for treating certain diseases of the pelvic organs. This process is generally performed, when the patient is deep asleep or by giving anesthesia. The doctor cuts the skin below the abdomen by a half- inch surgical cut. Carbon dioxide gas is pumped into the abdomen as it provides the clearest view about the organs to the doctor. After inserting the laparoscope, the doctor can view in the video monitor and could able to perform:

  •      Biopsy
  •      Check for the causes of infertility
  •      Endometriosis or removing scar tissues and other abdominal tissues
  •      Repair ovaries and uterine tubes
  •      Repair the parts of the uterus

Generally Pelvic laparoscopy is recommended for diagnosing and also for treatment like:

  •      An ovarian cyst is found or an abdominal, pelvic mass is found
  •      If cancer is diagnosed (ovaries, endometrial or cervical)
  •      Chronic pelvic pain
  •      Ectopic pregnancy and endometriosis
  •      Infertility and sudden pelvic pain

Risks of a pelvic laparoscopy

This procedure is considered as a surgical procedure and the risks are minimal in this procedure, includes:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Menstrual flow with heavy bleeding or with clots
  • Increased pain in the abdomen
  • Chills, fever
  • Swelling, bleeding, redness or drainage at the incision sites
  • Shortness of breath and nausea
