Mumbai hospitals face probe for violating PDNT act

A National Inspection and Monitoring Committee (NIMC) team found that the sonography machine of a diagnostic centre in Mumbai had dishonoured the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994 (PC & PNDT Act). The team also find that many of the IVF centres and infertility clinics were not registered under the PC & PNDT Act. These clinics are not maintaining the mandatory acts for an ideal infertility clinic, they were also not reporting to the concerned authorities.

The committee was explaining about the need of following PCPDNT law by all the genetic counselling centres and IVF and infertility centres, because certain methods and procedures of IVF and PGD may reveal the sex of a foetus. Another test, the cell-free foetal DNA testing, which is a screening test, indicates if a woman is at an increased risk of having a child with Down syndrome. In this test, the blood sample of the woman is taken after 10 weeks of pregnancy. Through this test, if a doctor wants to, s/he can know the sex of a foetus.
